TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

I had the pleasure of working with Neil Pollock from 1983-1988 when I was Deputy Librarian at Marrickville Municipal Library. At the time of my appointment Neil was Technical Servoces Librarian but was soon promoted to the position of Automation Co-ordinator to undertake the complete automation of the Library system through the implementation of Stowe Book (NCR).

This huge and complex project was achieved smoothely and within time frame. It's success was due to Neil's ability to logically analyse, methodically plan what needs to be done, organise and co-ordinate tasks, meet deadlines, make intelligent decisions, present clear arguements and reports, remain calm in stressful situations and maintain a sense of humour. He also very quickly gained the necessary technical knowledge of the hardware and software and developed business and negotiating skills.

He organised all staff to participate in relevant ways throughout the project so that by the time the system was ready to go live they had a good working knowledge and understanding of the system, had developed new skills and felt positive about the change.

The qualities Neil demonstrated in this particular project are qualities he applies to all situations.

As a member of the Senior Management Team he always took an holistic view of issues, seeing them in context and being prepared to take initiative and responsibility in any area of the library service required.

He had an excellent relationship with other staff, taking a leadership role with confidence and fairness.

At all times I had confidence in his decisions and appreciated his quiet determination and persistence to overcome difficulties.

As we were both involved with the Book User Association, I had many opportunities to see the ease with Neil related to and communicated with other Chief and Deputy Librarians and Stowe personnel and their professional respect for him.

I personally learnt a lot from Neil and was very pleased for him to be my successor.

I am confident that he has the necessary qualities, abilities and commitment to successfully meet greater professional challenges and further his career.

I recommend Neil to any future employer and would be happy to discuss this reference further.
